The Secret to Creating Habits Fast

Updated: Oct 18, 2022

The idea of making habits can be daunting to some people. You need determination and to keep trying, and some might not think that you can do it. Creating habits quickly is easier than you might think, however.

Same Time, Every Day

It can be hard to remember to do a habit when you allow yourself to do it whenever. Having a specific time in the day creates a routine and eventually, you’ll automatically be doing it. You brush your teeth every morning and night, a habit that happens at a certain time, so you don’t think about it much anymore. Having a certain time to do the new habit will end up creating the same effect.

Stick to a Month

If the idea of doing a habit for a long time makes you uneasy, just commit to doing it for a month. A month will pass soon enough and you won’t have to stress out over the habit any longer. But here’s the trick, once a month passes, the task you want to be a habit will become automatic. At that point, you’ll be able to do it every day with ease.

Do It with A Friend

So many people will push themselves harder when they have a friend cheering them on or doing the task with them. If you have a friend to keep you accountable, you won’t want to let them down and suddenly the task will become a habit. You can even make it a competition if your friend wants to create the habit as well. Who can form a habit first?

Start Small

Let’s say that you want to create a habit of spending 30 minutes practicing the piano. Start with just 5 minutes and build your way up to 30 over time. Starting small will make the task feel less daunting. If you just sit down to the piano, that 5 minutes will soon be up. Then you can bring it up to 10, and so on. Also, you’ll have already created the habit of sitting down to the piano before you even get to 30 minutes. At that point, you’ll fly through the time.

Be Kind to Yourself

Finally, life happens. You might forget a day or you just find the task too much to do. If you end up missing a day, don’t beat yourself up. Simply start again the next day and keep going.
